New Zealand is set to enter the submarine industry with its first submarine-launched submarine.
The New Zealand-designed submarine, which will be named Balao, is the first to be built by the country’s Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO.
It will be built under contract with the New Zealand Defence Force, with a total cost of $1.9bn (£1.2bn).
A total of seven sub-launchers will be available for use on board the Balao.
The submarines will be equipped with a range of sensors, including sonar, sonar mapping and sonar guidance.
They will also be able to carry out underwater surveillance and fire on target.
The new submarines are expected to replace the ageing fleet of existing submarines, with the Balaos being the first new submarine to enter operational service.
The submarine is expected to be operational in 2019.
