The Rollex, an American-made subsurface boat that has been a popular target of piracy since it entered service in 2012, is one of the more expensive submarines in the fleet.
The Rok-4M was purchased by the Japanese military for a mere $1.8 billion and was sold to Singapore for $4.4 billion in 2018.
That price tag is more than double the $2.2 billion that the US Navy paid for the U.S.
S Doral.
The U.K. Navy also paid Singapore $4 billion for the Doral in 2018, but the price tag for that vessel is a fraction of the $6 billion the Rok sank in the 2016 attack.
The cost of the Rollux sunken sub is a far cry from the $20 billion that some critics have said is needed to replace the ships in the Navy’s fleet.
The sunken Rolux was the most popular target in 2016 when pirates used it as a submarine to steal American ships and then took it on a high-speed attack cruise, according to a 2016 study.
It’s not clear whether the submarine will be sold to China.
The Japanese government said it would sell it to Singapore if it wants to.
Singaporean officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Type 46, a medium-class submarine, was also scrapped, along with the other Type 45 subs.
“If there’s anything that has made the sunken subs so expensive is that there are so many different models of the same boat,” said John Evers, a professor of maritime studies at the University of Michigan.
One reason for the price gap is the amount of water and the amount that can be contained in each vessel, according in a 2015 paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In 2016, the U, S.D.C. commissioned a new, larger vessel to replace a fleet of older submarines that the military says are vulnerable to attack.
Despite these drawbacks, the Roks are a critical part of the U-2 spy plane that provides critical intelligence about Russia’s military and foreign policy.
Even though the U., S.B., and Rolss are retired, the subs still provide critical intelligence to the U of S military, according the UB.
