PEPPAH, Japan — The US military on Monday confirmed it had captured two new Japanese subs in waters off the coast of Japan and that it was searching for the two that were reported missing in 2016.
A Japanese military spokesman said two of the Japanese subs were found off the southwestern coast of the country on Sunday night, the Associated Press news agency reported.
The Associated Press cited a military official as saying the two subs were “likely sunk” but did not say how.
It did not give further details on their location or their exact weight.
A US defense official said Monday the U.S. Navy had “a strong underwater search effort” in the area, but that no new information was available.
The US was still searching for one of the subs, the official said.
