Posted November 13, 2019 09:01:06The US Navy is developing an underwater submarine, which will be able to dive to depths of up to 30,000 meters, to be able explore the Arctic and the oceans surrounding it, the Pentagon said in a statement.
The project was described as a “highly ambitious” effort to develop the technology for “a highly flexible and responsive submarine design”, the statement said.
“This effort is an exciting example of how the Department of Defense can leverage research and development to advance America’s maritime capabilities and to address the challenges of climate change, maritime resource development, and other emerging threats,” it said.
The Navy hopes the new design will be ready for service by 2025.
The development was first revealed in January, but was never fully detailed.
The underwater design will also include a “multi-purpose propulsion system”, allowing the submarine to operate in a variety of scenarios, the statement added.
